So he WAS using an autocue! I only saw the excerpts on TV, and didn't realise that.
A wise old sage in my City, an LD Councillor, told me that he was not impressed by Nick's intellect when the LD leadership hustings came here. By contrast, he was very impressed by Chris Huhne but very frustrated by his failure to project himself.dreamingspirehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00324207120279777521noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3553440626649035970.post-47020276327352033372009-09-25T11:00:31.547+01:002009-09-25T11:00:31.547+01:00David - You point about the other leaders having t...David - You point about the other leaders having the advantage of dispatch boxes to lean on (and rest their notes) in the House of Commons is spot on. I also agree that 'town hall meetings' and set-piece speeches at party conferences are different events requiring different approaches.Max Atkinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06163447049027217653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3553440626649035970.post-51046769328954914982009-09-25T01:37:59.255+01:002009-09-25T01:37:59.255+01:00Very good analysis, I think the speech was good an...Very good analysis, I think the speech was good and confounded some commentators who had hoped to say something negative. However I agree it could have been even better if delivered at a lectern. One of the great advantages Cameron and Brown have at PMQs is they speak from their dispatch boxes, so why does Clegg dispense with the conference equivalent a lectern?

I think the problem is Nick is very good at the ‘Town Hall Meetings’ events, beating Cameron in that type of event. He seems to be trying to recreate that in a forum where it just doesn’t work. Nevertheless with the right help Clegg could prove to be a great speaker.David Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03074466074735623957noreply@blogger.com
